Building a Geospatial Database and Gis Data-model Integration for Banking: Atm Site Location

The huge and rapid advancement in science and technology in this globe such as GIS and Satellite digital mapping makes it a must for developing countries to catch-up and utilize it. Usage of GIS-technology is essential, as it is becoming one of the better and faster tools to manage resources and helps in the decision support process (Goodchild et. Al. 1999, Batty et. al. 1994a and 1994b). One example, assessing in taking decision of where to install Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) for banks in Amman (capital of Jordan), as people are starting to get use to the electronic bank-card. The major problem, however, is building a modern goespatial information infrastructure with suitable GIS-data model integration that can help the planning process (Elmasri and Navathe 2000). Knowing that there is no digital mapping infrastructure. In this case, there were only two ATM’s for the Bank Of Jordan that serves the region in Amman, as well as there aren't any close-by branches in many areas in Amman. The paper summarizes the first phase of this project success in terms of data collection from all resources such as: digitised hardcopy Cadastral maps, available softcopy (AutoCAD) Cadastral maps, digital satellite image, registration and digitisation process, GPS measurements integration, and implementation of Statistical data such as population and other related information. The fusion of all data and the implications will be discussed in the paper. The paper also discusses the criteria used in the spatial analysis, and also, reports on the success of the resultant GIS analysis to suggest proper locations for ATM’s. It matched the independent analysis resulted from the Bank planning department. The future work and orientation will be briefed such as determining other needs such as expanding and investing in special areas in which a detailed cadastral Land information system has to be developed. This also can be utilized for Land valuations process with proper computation matrix that is suitable for the region.
